چکیده

Introduction MR imaging of cartilage is widely accepted as a tool in the evaluation of cartilage. Originally such studies were limited to morphological sequences, but increasingly MR imaging is being used to produce parameter maps (i.e. relaxation or diffusion constants) which allows a biochemical evaluation of the cartilage. One such parameter which has been extensively used is the T2 relaxation value, where the T2 value of the cartilage is a function of collagen content, concentration and water content [1-4]. T2 maps are created using a multi-echo spin echo technique. However some problems with this technique have to be considered such as stimulated echoes create a fluctuation in the signal within the echo train, crosstalk issues and relatively long scan time. We present here the T2-star relaxation constant as an alternative to the T2 relaxation constant in a preliminary cross-sectional study of patients after cartilage repair using Microfracturing technique (MFX).

Prolongation of T2 Stratification after Microfracture Does Not Indicate Normal Cartilage

We read with interest the recent article by Domayer et al. titled “Microfracture in the Ankle: Clinical Results and MRI with T2-Mapping at 3.0 T after 1 to 8 Years” (Cartilage Online First, October 18, 2010). The authors concluded that microfracture surgery as a means of treatment for osteochondral lesions of the talus can provide a repair tissue that is similar to that of “adjacent” cartilage ...

Quantitative T2 mapping of matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte transplantation at 3 Tesla: an in vivo cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate magnetic resonance (MR) T2 mapping for characterization of cartilage repair tissue following matrix-associated autologous cartilage transplantation (MACT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifteen patients were evaluated following MACT using a 3T MR scanner. Patients were categorized into 2 postoperative intervals: I: 3-13 months, II: 19-42 months. Mean T2 relaxation times calcula...

MRI T1ρ and T2 mapping for the assessment of articular cartilage changes in patients with medial knee osteoarthritis after hemicallotasis osteotomy

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to clarify the appearance of the reparative tissue on the articular surface and to analyse the properties of the reparative tissue after hemicallotasis osteotomy (HCO) using MRI T1ρ and T2 mapping. METHODS Coronal T1ρ and T2 mapping and three-dimensional gradient-echo images were obtained from 20 subjects with medial knee osteoarthritis. We set the reg...

Morphological and biochemical (T2) MR evaluation and comparison of cartilage repair tissue of the patella and the medial femoral condyle

Introduction: In a recent survey on 25,124 knee arthroscopies, cartilage lesions were found most frequently within the patella (36%) and the medial femoral condyle (34%). However, there is a clear topographical difference in cartilage surface and cartilage thickness between these two anatomical sites. Furthermore, when looking at biochemical and biomechanical properties, this regional variation...

Morphological MRI and T2 mapping of cartilage repair tissue after mosaicplasty with tissue-engineered cartilage in a pig model

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of mosaicplasty with tissue-engineered cartilage for the treatment of osteochondral defects in a pig model with advanced MR technique. Eight adolescent miniature pigs were used. The right knee underwent mosaicplasty with tissue-engineered cartilage for treatment of focal osteochondral defects, while the left knee was repaired via single mosaicp...
